The program is grounded in Ignatian and Carmelite spirituality, with a Catholic worldview and an emphasis on the vital role of genuine prayer and growth in holiness and virtue.
1st year: Includes four Avila courses and the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius:
Intro to Spiritual Direction
Foundations in Prayer
Discernment of Spirits
Breaking the Chains that bind: Intro to Moral Theology
The Ignatian Spiritual Exercises (30 day or 19th annotated) are the responsibility of the individual candidate and must be approved by the Directors of Heart of Christ program before starting, and must be completed before the first June session.
The four courses can be taken in any order. Application to the Heart of Christ may be made after completion of two of the courses.
June segment for 2020: June 12-19, 2020
Week-end times: Friday evening, all day Sat. and Sun. including evenings. Week day times: 9-5 Mon. thru Fri.
2nd year: Classes are held 1st & 3rd Thursdays, 6:30 – 8:30 pm via Zoom, beginning in September and running through the first week of May and culminates with a week-long session in June
1. First semester will focus on learning spiritual direction principles & techniques, including role play
2. Second semester will focus on a Practicum: candidates direct one person for 16 weeks through a series of Ignatian prayer themes
3. Supervision occurs throughout the practicum
June segment for 2020: June 15-19, 2020, 9am to 5pm
June Segments: Topics for the week long sessions alternate yearly between Prayer and Growth in Holiness with Dan Burke, and a course in the Theological and Cardinal Virtues with Gerry Rauch.
Cost for the first year is $150 per class paid to Avila. Cost is subject to change at the discretion of the Avila Institute.
Cost of the Spiritual Exercises varies depending on the Director.
Cost for first June session with Heart of Christ is $500.
Cost for the second year (Sept thru May) with Heart of Christ is $400.
Cost for second June session with Heart of Christ is $400.
