I try my best to remain open to the mental seeds God plants in my very imperfect brain from time to time, so that I can then use those seeds to write a new article for my column or even Apostoli. A few weeks ago I read something about how the apostles freaked out in the storm even though the literal Master of the Universe was sleeping in their midst three feet away ( Mk 4:35-41). It occurs to me that, if these very human and imperfect me represent each of us ( as they so often do) and they could freak out despite having Jesus right there with them, then perhaps the storm swirling around them was not the storm they should have been worried about. Perhaps the bigger and deeper storm was brewing within each of them ( and us ) in that we can freak out despite having Our Lord’s calm assurance that He is with us always. Christ can help us calm that interior storm, but we have to meet him halfway by surrendering and trusting him more. I propose that we cannot hear God’s Voice in the silence of the present unless we still the noise of our soul, heart, and mind created by the superficial and very temporary things of this world. Before we worry about the clouds above us, then, we need to work on the clouds and storms within us first. Just a thought.
